Lutz Drum Pumps: Electric, Air-Operated, Explosion-Proof and Screw Series Overview
Updated: 2026-09-04
Overview of the Lutz (Germany, est. 1954) drum pump range: standard electric and air-operated models, EEx de IIC T6 explosion-proof versions, HD-E medium-viscosity and high-viscosity screw pumps handling up to 120,000 cps, with TR/TS flow meters.
Selection support
- Share flow rate, pressure, medium, temperature and material requirements.
- We can support pump selection, dosing package configuration and spare parts matching.
- Detailed English datasheets and quotations are available for priority models on request.
Technical details
Drum pumps (also called container or barrel pumps) transfer liquids safely and economically out of drums, tanks and containers, and are standard equipment for decanting and transfer duty in the chemical, coatings, food and pharmaceutical industries. Lutz Pumps, founded in Frankfurt, Germany in 1954, is a technically leading multinational manufacturer in this field, with subsidiaries and factories in the UK, USA, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Austria.
The Lutz range covers everything from thin solvents to media of 120,000 cps, and from neutral liquids through strong acids and alkalis to flammable and explosive media. Combined with TR/TS series flow meters it forms a complete metering system with local and remote automatic control.
Range at a glance
| Series | Suitable media | Flow rate | Max. viscosity | Pump tube material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard electric / air-operated drum pump | Acids, alkalis, mineral oils, solvents — thin to slightly viscous | Depends on motor and impeller type | approx. 500 cps | PP, PVDF, aluminium, 316 SS, Hastelloy C |
| Explosion-proof drum pump | Organic solvents, flammable liquids, hazardous areas | Max. 210 L/min | 750 cps | 316 stainless steel, nickel alloy HC |
| HD-E medium-viscosity screw pump | Acids and alkalis, oils, pigments, food | Max. 20 L/min | 4,000 cps | 316 stainless steel (sanitary) |
| High-viscosity screw pump | Resins, glycerine, honey and similar | 12–120 L/min | 120,000 cps | 316 stainless steel (sanitary) |
| TR / TS flow meters | Metering and batch control with drum pumps | 10–120 L/min | 20 cps (TR) / 4,000 cps (TS) | PP, PVDF, PPO, PPS, 316 SS |
Lutz uses a modular design: motors and pump tubes are purchased separately and all motors interchange freely with all pump tubes. Standard electric and air-operated drum pumps are the most common configuration, with five tube materials and two impeller types available — see the standard drum pump selection guide. Where there is an explosion-proof requirement, higher viscosity, or a need for inline metering, select the corresponding series above.
Applications
Lutz drum pumps handle the following media:
- Acids and alkalis, chemical solutions, organic and inorganic compounds
- Fuels, diesel, engine oils and additives
- Caustic solutions, etching and pickling baths, wastewater
- Solvents, thinners, hardeners, paints, coatings and inks
- Cutting oils, refrigerants, hydraulic and gear oils, cleaning agents, penetrating fluids
- Flavours and fragrances, vegetable oils, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants
- Epoxy resins, rubber, adhesives, glues, low-viscosity greases, latex, syrups, glucose, cream, mousse
Selection notes
Three parameters drive drum pump selection, in order: medium viscosity (centrifugal versus screw type), flammability (whether an explosion-proof motor is mandatory), and corrosivity (stainless steel, nickel alloy or plastic pump tube). Drum depth and required head determine tube length. Where accurate dispensed quantities are needed, adding a TR or TS flow meter turns the pump into a metering system.
