Technical details
A conventional centrifugal drum pump loses flow rapidly as viscosity rises, and beyond a point will not move the medium at all. The Lutz HD-E uses a screw design that displaces a fixed volume per revolution rather than throwing liquid outwards with an impeller, so output stays stable through the medium-viscosity range of 500–4,000 cps. The sanitary 316 stainless steel pump tube makes it suitable for food and pharmaceutical ingredients.

When to move from centrifugal to screw type
The deciding factor is viscosity, not motor power. For reference: cooking oil is roughly 50–100 cps, glycerine around 1,000 cps, honey 2,000–10,000 cps, and most paints and coatings fall between 100 and 2,000 cps.
Above roughly 500 cps, a centrifugal drum pump's actual delivery departs noticeably from its nameplate figure and a screw pump should be used instead. Beyond 4,000 cps the HD-E in turn reaches its limit, and the high-viscosity screw drum pump (up to 120,000 cps) is required.
Why the sanitary material matters
The sanitary 316 stainless steel tube has a polished internal surface with no dead spaces, making it easy to clean and resistant to product retention — as required in food and pharmaceutical production. The same property matters for pigments and inks, which cure if left in the tube: cured residue will seize the screw, so prompt cleaning materially extends pump life.
