Technical details

When transferring organic solvents and thinners, or working inside a classified hazardous area, a standard electric drum pump carries a risk of ignition from electrical sparking and an explosion-proof model is mandatory. Lutz explosion-proof drum pumps are rated EEx de IIC T6 and are available with either an explosion-proof electric motor or an air motor.

Explosion-proof electric or air motor?

Each drive has its trade-offs; choose according to site conditions:

  • ME II explosion-proof electric motor: independent of any air supply and stable in output, suited to fixed workstations with reliable power and long continuous transfer duty. It is heavier, and explosion-proof motors cost more than air motors.
  • MD series air motor: inherently safe with no electrical components, giving the highest explosion-proof reliability, plus infinitely variable speed and no burn-out on stall — ideal for frequent starts and mobile work. It requires a stable compressed air supply, and moisture in that air will shorten motor life.

Pump tube material

316 stainless steel suits most organic solvents and moderately corrosive media at good value. For severe duty involving halogens, strong oxidisers or elevated temperature — chlorinated solvents or concentrated acids, for example — specify the nickel alloy HC tube, which is considerably more resistant than 316 but costs more. Confirm chemical compatibility against the actual medium and concentration before ordering.

For accurate metering in a hazardous area, add a Lutz TS series flow meter with an explosion-proof relay module. See the drum pump range overview for other series.
