Technical details

Resins, glycerine, honey and adhesives are the most demanding media in drum pump service — ordinary pumps either cannot move them or leave heavy residues that are difficult to clean out. The Lutz high-viscosity screw drum pump covers a viscosity span of 1 to 120,000 cps and is designed for rapid dismantling and cleaning.

Why high viscosity demands a screw pump

A centrifugal pump throws liquid outwards with an impeller, so the higher the viscosity the greater the internal friction loss, and head and flow collapse together. A screw pump is positive displacement: each revolution advances a fixed volume, so delivery is largely independent of viscosity and the pump keeps working even on media approaching a semi-solid state at 120,000 cps.

For reference, honey runs 2,000–10,000 cps, epoxy resins reach tens of thousands, and cold syrups and some adhesives can exceed 100,000 cps. Always size on the viscosity at the actual working temperature — most high-viscosity media change dramatically with temperature, and using ambient figures usually under-sizes the pump.

Why quick-strip cleaning matters

High-viscosity media left in the pump tube cure and set readily: at best the pump stalls on the next start, at worst the tube is ruined. This series is designed for rapid dismantling so the tube can be flushed immediately after use. That matters most where one pump handles several products in turn — different colours of resin, or different food batches — protecting both against cross-contamination and against damage to the equipment.

Motor selection

Choose the MA II electric motor for general duty. Flammable media or classified areas require the ME II explosion-proof electric motor, or an inherently safe MD or DA air motor (see also the explosion-proof drum pump). Continuous high-torque duty calls for the three-phase motor. Because starting torque demand is high on viscous media, do not size the motor from flow rate alone — confirm against the actual viscosity.
