Drum Unloading: Drum Pump, AODD Pump or Progressive Cavity Pump?

No single pump is best for every drum-unloading duty. For mobile transfer of water-like liquids with the tube inserted directly into a drum, start with a drum pump. For fixed piping, suction lift or solids, consider an AODD pump. For higher viscosity, low pulsation or shear-sensitive products, evaluate a progressive-cavity pump.

Choose a drum pump when mobility matters

Where operators change containers frequently and the liquid is relatively thin, an immersion drum pump is usually the simplest arrangement. Lutz modular drives can be combined with tubes selected for acids, alkalis, oils or approved flammable-liquid service. See the Lutz drum pump overview.

Choose an AODD pump for suction and solids

An air-operated diaphragm pump is useful when a long tube cannot be inserted, the pipework is fixed, suction lift is required, or the product contains particles. Viscosity and suction lift reduce delivered flow, so the performance curve must be checked.

Move to progressive cavity for viscous product

When a centrifugal drum pump loses capacity as viscosity rises, or the product is resin, glycerine, honey or coating material, compare the medium-viscosity HD-E and high-viscosity Lutz screw pump. Positive-displacement action is better suited to viscous and shear-sensitive media.

Flammable service is a system decision

For flammable liquids, verify pump and tube materials, drive certification, conductive hose and nozzle, grounding and hazardous-area classification. An air motor is not by itself proof that the complete installation is approved, and an ordinary plastic tube does not become suitable when connected to an Ex motor.

Quick decision

  • Thin liquid, frequent drum changes, portable duty: drum pump.
  • Fixed line, self-priming, solids or variable duty: AODD pump.
  • Medium/high viscosity, low shear or stable feed: progressive-cavity pump.
  • Measured batches: add an appropriate flow meter or batch controller rather than estimating from run time.

Always select against the actual liquid, temperature, viscosity, solids, container geometry, flow, head, hose length and hazardous-area data—not the largest number on a catalogue cover.
